at first sight, the Signal Hill Observatory Tower is one striking architecture. on our first day in Kota Kinabalu, we decided to take in the view from this little deck, perched on the highest point within the city. we found the entrance to the jungle trek at the foot of the hill (right next to the Garden Hotel), where we could easily follow where the stairs lead - up to the observatory deck area. it was such a nice relief from the bright afternoon sun.
it was so much fun for me to be in the jungle area, as you can see. it's a beautiful patch of green, with countless insects and birds if you look real closely. i could hear monkeys but no signs of them around. some of the wooden planks were broken so i think this isn't a safe route to take at night.
it took less than 10 minutes for us to walk through the jungle (perfect dose of jungle fun!) before reaching the top. we saw the observatory area as soon as we saw the road. it is a humble little building with nothing but a small cafe and a few benches to relax. completely different from what we've expected from down below, it looked pretty huge - but the view was great. a panoramic view of Kota Kinabalu, from end to end, plus the view reaches out to the islands of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. it was as if Gaya Island wa only a stone-throw away.
the sunset view would be amazing from up here. the view of the night lights would be pretty awesome too.
our accommodation was hidden behind those trees.
the entrance to our hike was right beside that orange building (Garden Hotel).
K took a rest while i walked around the platform. i bet he'd like a cold beer after so much of walking in the heat..i wished i had one.
we made the right decision to do this on our first day, i think. a bird's eye view of the entire city before starting to explore seemed right. we took the same trail back to where we started at the foothill, and made our way to the waterfront.
